Squadron CX July 20 2002 Meeting Notes

Our regular meeting was held at South County Airport, led by John Gould.
Cutting to the chase: WE VOTED TO PURCHASE AN AIRPLANE!!!!

A builder, Mr. Robert Best, has attempted to donate a Kit Fox IV with a 912 engine to Independence High School, thanks to Mike Reynolds’ project. The school turned it down. The airplane is nearly finished. Mr. Best is unable to finish it. He wants two things in return for his donation:

John Feemster proposed that his group, Saratoga Area Senior Center, could accept the airplane, and then sell it to him. It then could be brought into the club for the benefit of the school and the club. And the crowd went wild. A motion to move forward with this plan was moved, seconded, and approved by unanimous cheers. There are details to be worked out. We may be involved with EAA Chapter 62, the Independence High School, and possibly an EAA chapter in Hollister.  It’ll be interesting to watch this development unfold.  Kudos to Mike Reynolds

We are on the lists for hangars at both South County and Hollister Airports. We will have a shop space available to us in the Weatherly hangar at Hollister, starting Aug. 1.  More on club ownership of an airplane:  The EAA does not allow an EAA club to own an aircraft;  however, USUA may give us an opening. We may form an “Owners’ Club” within our club.

Dave Hilpert has purchased a T-Bird II on floats, arriving soon from Iowa.

Blade is awaiting delivery of his Weedhopper.

John Feemster has a GT 500 in need of repair (also has floats). This has a possibility of becoming a club aircraft.

Deke gave Part II of his Tech Talk on the Bing carburetor.  Some highlights:

If it’s running too rich:

  1. “4-stroking”

  2. High fuel consumption

  3. Fouled plugs

  4. Loss of power

 If it’s running too lean:

  1. High EGT and CHT (exhaust gas temp. & cylinder head temp.)

  2. Hot plugs

  3. Great power just before the engine explodes.

 Make adjustments in this order:

  1.  Full speed

  2.  Mid-range

  3.  Idle, about 200 rpm

Lou made a survey of the room to find out what each member wants in an aircraft.

Next month we will meet at Hollister for a Tour of the Weatherly hangar Bring a lawn chair Click here for Agenda and Directions
