EAA Squadron CX and USUA 155, Sep 20, 2003, Meeting Notes:

The meeting was called to order at 09:30 by John Gould, at the Wings of History Clubhouse, South County Airport. 22 souls aboard.

ELECTION!  After a rousing round robin debate with affirmations and denials from every corner, we filled out our secret ballots and elected new officers.

President:                     Mike Reynolds

Vice President:             Deke Deick

Secretary:                     Rich Grialou

Treasurer:                     John Gould

Congratulations to all, and good flying in the year to come!

Appointed positions:

Web Master:                            Blade Doyle

Newsletter:                               Vaughn McIlrath

Young Eagles:                           Mike Reynolds

Chief Information Officer:          Rich Grialou

Champion of Sport Pilot:           Deke Deick

            Chief Flight Instructor*: John Feemster

Deke on USUA business:

Mike Reynolds and Deke are waiting for their official status as Basic Flight Instructor to show up. The paperwork seems to have stalled out somewhere in the USUA, but will get handled.

The GT500 is ready to fly and will be available for training as soon as the instructors are available. This airplane also fits the requirement for Sport Pilot, so that any time logged in it can be counted toward your S.P. pilot rating. John Feemster still is the owner of the GT500.

Sport Pilot:  The designation should be coming back from the Dept. of Transportation by as early as late October. The hope is that it will be real by December and the anniversary of the Wright Bros. first flight.

PRESIDENT MIKE REYNOLDS:

Independence High School won The Golden Bell Award (first, out of 180 schools competing)! Congratulations Mike!

Kitfox:  Proposal that we liquidate the aircraft and use the money to acquire an airplane that would be more suitable for the club. The proposed method is to hold a raffle, with news coverage, and even possibly national coverage. There was a lot of discussion building momentum in the idea, and a committee established to move it forward. John Feemster is currently the legal owner. John is authorizing us to sell the airplane, and is donating it to the club, so that he can recover his investment in the aircraft. Thank you John!

The Raffle Committee:  Mike Reynolds

                                                George Nicholson

                                                Deke Deick

                                                Rich Grialou

                                                Vince Jahn

                                                Rusty (absent, but congratulations, Rusty!)

The motion was passed to authorize the Committee to go forward. There was further discussion in the urgency to get this thing moving. Pretty exciting stuff!

Round Table, with focus on getting people and aircraft into the air:

Deke:   The GT 500 is ready to fly;  the Tundra will fly today;  Robert Smith’s Air Camper is in the hospital with a wounded wing;  Deke’s Hawk will be here next spring.

Vince Jahn:  ready to buy an airplane.

Erik Wahlstrom:  interested in Sport or G.A. aircraft.

George Nicholson:  interested in the Little Buzzard. See it at

http://www.ultralightnews.com. Here’s a picture:

Mike R.:  The Genesis is very close to being finished. (Independence H. S.)

Bob Meuse:  The Tundra is still having engine problems. Oxygen sensor?

Gary Garchar:  Looking to own an airport in the Southwest somewhere.

Robert Smith:  Air Camper is getting some adjustment.

John Feemster:  Quicksilver MXII is ready to fly as soon as the new prop arrrives – will be a good starter-plane for lightweight guys. His GT500 will carry 500 lbs.

            Use your radio.

Working on establishing a published flight pattern for ultralights at Hollister.

Dave Stader:  Trike with a 582 engine, flies out of New Jerusalem airport (near Tracy).

Rich Grialou:  Flying Cessnas now. Advises tricycle gear.

*John Gould appointed John Feemster as the club’s Chief Flight Instructor. So moved and passed. There’s satisfaction in formally acknowledging what has been emerging as obvious. Thank you to both John F. and John G.

Next Meeting:  Next time we’ll meet at Hollister Airport, a week earlier than usual, on October 11th, in support of the Hollister Airport Day. Volunteers are needed for wing-walking and directing traffic, from about 10:00 am until 1:00 pm.

                                    Rusty                            Gary Fox

                                    Deke

If you can help out, contact Deke w_dieck@pacbell.net.

Deke brought up Young Eagles.

John Gould is looking for “lifts” for storing aircraft. If you can steer him toward one, contact him Gould42@aol.com.

We wrapped up at 11:00 and several of us headed for Hollister and the Ding-A-Ling, then some flying!

Editor’s Footnote:  So far this “Newsletter” has been “Vaughn’s Notes”. I want to open the door to your participation in this thing. If anyone would like to contribute anything to this effort, in whatever form, contact me. An item that I want to see is an occasional interview of a member of the club. Especially some of the older guys/gals who have a more experience than most of us. We have some pretty darn interesting people in this group. If you will contribute, I’ll be sure to get it out there.  –VM
