EAA Chapter UL110

A new era of air sports aviation has evolved over the last 15 years, and is taking hold in America and all over the world. Now anyone can fly for fun and adventure with ultralight, microlights, and experimental aircraft. Utilizing new materials and new engines, designers have created aircraft that are un-believably fun to fly.

These aircraft provide the magic of simple, pure flight. The wind in your face and an unobstructed view of the countryside makes flying for fun a powerful and compelling experience. The unobstructed view is possible with a pusher motor behind the pilots.

Most of this activity is centered around small airports through clubs that are dedicated to the spirit of sharing, learning, and fun. Clubs include a growing number of ultralight and light airplane enthusiasts who actively participate in chapter meetings, fly-ins, safety seminars and other programs. Clubs provide time-share opportunities of ownership for owning or building and flying

Sport pilots own and fly all types of Ultralights including trikes, paragliders, gyroplanes, airplanes, and sailplanes. They come from all walks of life and share a common dream - to fly for fun! If that's your goal then you are likely a member.

Dreamers Builders Flyers

Dreamers have the vision but lack the means or access to aircraft. The club provides a team to fulfill the dream.

Builders, acting alone, lack some skills or time to complete the aircraft. The club provides multiple skills, tools, equipment and manpower for successful building.

Flyers, alone, may lack money to buy assembled aircraft or access to aircraft and instructors. The club shares the cost and networks the Dreamers, Builders to all become Flyers.

Pilots that achieve actual flying within all three catagories:

Part 103 single seater

Sport pilot dual seater

Recreational pilot up to a 4 seater

Pilots access to all three aircraft catagories:

        single seat, part 103 ultralight

        twin seat, part 103 trainer

        experimental class aircraft

Now let's look at the situation in the US. The wonderful freedom of FAR 103 has a price to pay. The restrictions are:

  • Single seaters only (with an exemption for trainers).
  • Weighs less than 254 pounds empty weight (115 Kg).
  • Has a fuel capacity not exceeding 5 U.S. gallons.
  • Is not capable of more than 55 knots calibrated airspeed at full power in level flight.
  • Has a power-off stall speed which does not exceed 24 knots calibrated airspeed.

The SV Ultralight Club
We make playing in the air more fun, more exciting, more economical, and more accessible as a sport pilot. No matter what ratings you hold, no matter what type of ultralight you fly, learn more about recreational opportunities. Club members bring the spirit and real-world action of our sport to the public at numerous regional fly-ins as well.

See ultralights fly and talk to those who fly them. Whether you have started flying or not, joining a Club is a great way to enhance your ultralight experience. Club members can be your mentors. They have a wealth of first hand information. Educational seminars, weekend group flights, cross-country trips, picnics, and hangar flying are just a few of the benefits when you join the members of your local Club.
